My girlfriend likes to watch movies from the early 2000s. She finds them fascinating: a picture of a time far enough away to feel like the past, but close to us in memory. We were growing up then: we’re old enough to have memories of how it felt, how it looked, how it tasted to be alive in 2002.
This is the exact reason I hate movies from the early 2000s. They remind me of what was maybe the worst time for me, personally. The fashion was famously horrendous. The culture was puritanical, sexist, and steeped in shame. And the movies? Well, they reflected that.
